Born on September 20, 1926 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late George and Mary Jane (Berry) Garthwaite.
Richard was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II.
On March 20, 1959 he married his wife of 61 years Helen M. (Maloney) Garthwaite. She survives.
Richard retired as a self-employed contactor.
He was a member of the James J. Patterson Post 813 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Richard is survived by his children Richard Garthwaite, Jr., John Garthwaite and his wife Brenda and JoAnn Crytser and her husband Edward, one sister Lois Atkins, one brother Samuel Garthwaite, ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 4 brothers (Clayton, Robert, George and John Garthwaite) and two sisters (Grace and Gene Garthwaite).
Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.
