Jose Nicolas Olivas y Ontiveros was born on 6 December 1798 at Santa Barbara Presidio to Juan Mathias Olivas ("soldado del este Real Presidio de Santa Barbara") and Juana de Dios Ontiveros. He was baptized on 7 December 1798 at Mission Santa Barbara. He married Maria Juana Juliana Ruiz Ybarra on 18 January 1824 at Mission San Gabriel. Nicolas died about August 1852 in California and was buried at Old Calvary Cemetery.

Although the attached burial record does not contain any details other than his name, it appears that this is the correct Nicolas Olivas. His last child was born in 1850 and his widowed wife remarried in 1859. The other men with the name Nicolas Olivas in the area at this time died much later.
