JoAnn Gelnaw Matthews passed away on April 13th, 2022 with her family by her side. She was 64 years old.
JoAnn was born on July 28th, 1957 to her parents Erwin and Mary Gelnaw in Detroit Michigan. JoAnn graduated from Redford High School in 1975, then graduated with her Bachelor's degree in political science in 1980 from San Diego State University California, and then with her Masters in political science in 1985 from Syracuse New York Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
JoAnn married her loving husband, Kevin Matthews on December 17th 1977, in San Diego California. She traveled all over with Kevin during his navy service until 1982, including to Europe during her final years in college.
JoAnn then moved to Norfolk Virginia with Kevin where she was a teacher at Norfolk Virginia Junior University for over two years which was one of her many passions until they moved to Michigan in late 1990. She donated to many charities, schools for children, especially, all through her life. Giving to others was an important part of her life that she instilled in all she knew, especially her three children, Joseph, Mary and Benjamen.
JoAnn loved to travel, something she did all her life with her husband. She also enjoyed playing the violin, photography, her adorable pet cats and horses, singing and dancing, watching classic movies, and most of all, her beautiful children who were her pride and joy.
She was stubborn to a fault, but always had the best intentions for her family. She supported them through the many highs and difficulties of their lives.
JoAnn will forever be remembered for her wonderful laugh, amazing smile, giving nature, gentle kiss, loving embrace and unconditional love. Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate her life and find comfort that she is in heaven watching over us.
JoAnn is survived by her loving husband, Kevin Matthews, sister, Kathy Upton, son, Joseph Matthews, daughter, Mary Manley, and son, Benjamen Matthews.
