Mr. Abshire was a member of Boones Mill Church of the Brethren and attended Westminster Presbyterian Church regularly, while his health permitted. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army for five years in Europe, Africa and Italy. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #484 and the Vinton Masonic Lodge #204.
Mr. Abshire was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. William D. Abshire, brothers, Paul H. Abshire and David H. Abshire, a brother-in-law, Raymond Webster and a nephew, David Abshire.
He was a devoted caretaker of his wife until his recent illness. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mildred Whitlow Abshire; brothers and sisters-in-law, the Rev. William R. Abshire and wife Helen, Roanoke, Howard D. Abshire and wife, Jackie; sister-in-law, Marie Abshire, all of Boones Mill; sisters and brothers-in-law, May A. Webster, Boones Mill, Jane Ellen A. Cundiff and husband, Walter, Rocky Mount, Naomi A. Wingo and husband Cecil, Roanoke; nephews, Tommy Webster, Claude Webster, the Rev. William Abshire and Cecil Wingo; nieces, Sandra A. Hancock, Annette C. Board, Phillis Fagan, Lois Arrington, Norma Gerig and Lori Wingo; a devoted nephew-in-law, John Max Hancock, Jr.; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and faithful in-laws.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Chapel, 5160 Peters Creek Road, by the Rev. Robert Miller and the Rev. William D. Abshire. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home.
