He was born October 4, 1931 and was a son of the late Homer Blankenship and Helen Cobler Blankenship. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roosevelt Blankenship.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. He worked for the former Bassett-Walker Knitting Co. and was a member of Rich Acres Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Burge Blankenship of the home; two daughters, Sherrie Conner of Rocky Mount and Dana Blankenship; one son, Jerry Blankenship of Fort Sill, Okla.; one stepson, Robert B. (Bobby) McKinney of Charlottesville; one sister, Nellie Branscome of Ridgeway; five brothers, William H. (Bill) Blankenship of Bassett, Charlie Blankenship and Clifford Blankenship, both of Collinsville, Stuart Blankenship of Stuart and Raymond Blankenship of Axton; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Rich Acres Christian Church, Martinsville with Minister Tim Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
