Velda Pauline Hughes passed from this life on May 19, 2022, at the age of 77 in Prague, Oklahoma.

Velda was born on December 16, 1944, in London, England, during the bombings of World War II. She was the daughter of Carl Chatman and Olive Florence (Evans) Ames.

At the age of two, Velda moved with her parents to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she was raised and received her education at Tulsa Edison, graduating with the Class of 1962. On June 1, 1973, Velda was united in marriage to Wayne Herbert Hughes establishing their home in Cleveland, Oklahoma. In 1985, Velda began working at the Health Department for the State of Oklahoma, retiring after 25 years in 2010. In 2011, Velda moved to Prague, Oklahoma, where she has continued to reside.

Velda loved life and being around her family. She loved her Lord and Savior and enjoyed gardening, plants, flowers, and bird watching. She loved visiting with her neighbors, children, singing and dancing. Christmas time was always special, especially having her family at her house.
Those left to cherish her memory include her six children Phil Hughes and his wife Julia of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Pamela McCleary of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Keri Laxton and her husband Jimmy of Prague, Oklahoma, Winema Hughes of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Rita Hantsbarger of Bettendorf, Iowa, Mike Hughes and his wife Cindy of Fredonia, Kansas; eighteen grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Olive Ames, husband Wayne Hughes, daughter Veronica Hughes, best friend and sister Sherry Lamb, brother-in-law Ted Lamb and son-in-law Shane McCleary.

On Saturday, May 21, 2022, private graveside services were held at the Woodland Cemetery, with Rusty Ferguson speaking. 2:00 pm, Monday, May 23, 2022, memorial services will be at the Calvary Way Church in Prague, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portable Meals on Wheels or a charity of your choice. Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
