Upon graduation from Parkersburg High School, Carl attended the University of Virginia, where he played football and was president of the honor council. His academic studies were cut short when he enlisted and honorably served in the US Navy during the Korean War. While a crew member of the USS Haven, he earned the distinction and recognition of sailing around the world. Upon honorable discharge, he continued his studies and earned a Bachelor's degree in business and economics from Marietta College.
He had a distinguished business career at Wheeling Steel, LB Foster Company, McJunkin Corporation, and Morain Sales and Service. He was an avid fly fisherman, accomplished golfer, and reader of world history. His generosity was felt on multiple levels by many organizations and people. He was a great father, grandfather, mentor, and coach.
He was born in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Carl B. Miller and Wilma K. Wiant.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Norma M. Miller. He is survived by his son and daughter in-law, Carl W. II and Pamela Miller of Louisville, Ky, granddaughter and her husband, Kelly Leigh Miller and Alexander Sloves of Chicago, IL, his cousin and her husband, Pixie and Jack Dillard of Proctorville, OH and his best friend, from his US Navy days, John Fredericks of Flemington, NJ.
He never liked being the center of attention, per his wishes there will be no memorial service or visitation. He wishes to spend eternity on the campus of Marietta College with his ashes being spread during a private ceremony at a later date.
