Augustus George Washington Christopher, Jr. "Gus", passed away peacefully at his home in Williamsburg, VA on January 12, 2008.

The son of Louisa Brown Glassell Christopher and Augustus George Washington Christopher Sr., Gus was born in Wicomico Church on February 3, 1932. He will be fondly remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, community service and dedication to his family.

Gus graduated from Wicomico Church High School in 1949 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1953. He later earned a Bachelor's degree in accounting from Christopher Newport University.

After moving to Williamsburg in 1965, Gus worked for many years in the real estate, banking and accounting professions. He helped organize the Williamsburg National Bank and the Tidewater Bank and Trust Company. In addition, he served on the board of the Bank of Williamsburg (Bay Community Bank) and the audit committee of Union Bank Shares.

Gus was a past president of the Kilmarnock-White Stone-Irvington Rotary Club and a longtime member of the Williamsburg Rotary Club. He also served many years in the James-City Ruritan Club, where he held several offices, including district governor.

He was an active member of the Williamsburg Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Hayward Currell Christopher; his son, George Emory Christopher and his wife, Juliet C.B. Christopher and their daughter, Gillian Emma Christopher; his son, William and his wife, Kate, and their children, Jacob James Clark, William "Will" Andrew Clark and Emory Eisenhower "Ike" Christopher; in addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his brother, Robert Glassell Christopher Sr. and his wife, Susan O'Hara Christopher, and their son, Robert, his wife, Squiffy, and their children, Elizabeth and Sally.

Visitation for family and friends was held from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at the Nelsen Funeral Home on 3785 Strawberry Plains Road in Williamsburg. Funeral services were held at the Williamsburg Baptist Church on 227 Richmond Road in Williamsburg at 11am on Thursday, January 17, 2008, and at 3pm a brief ceremony followed by interment at the United Methodist Church in Wicomico Church, VA.
