Bill was born on October 21, 1940, in San Francisco, California, the son of Leighton and Dorothy Stone. His father, Leighton Arthur Stone, was born in Mystic, Iowa.
Upon graduation from the University of California at Berkeley, Bill was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy and served in the Vietnam War.
Before leaving for duty, he married his high school sweetheart, Gail, in 1962.
After completing his service, he began a career in banking in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Bill's lifelong passion was baseball both as a player and as an umpire. He became a Little League umpire and achieved his goal to be an umpire in the Senior League World Series. Bill was also a dedicated lifetime member of the Lions Club International for over 40 years.
The family wishes to thank the VA Hospital of Iowa, Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center, and Suncrest Hospice of Iowa for their loving care.
Bill will be buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Adel, Iowa on June 7, 2022, at 9:30 AM.
