December 22, 1940 - May 13, 2022
James McNeal Carson Jr "Neal" passed away on Friday, May 13 at Monument Health in Rapid City, South Dakota. Neal was born on December 22, 1940, to Maryevelyne and James McNeal Carson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Neal graduated High School from Chula Vista High in San Diego, California. Following graduation, Neal enlisted in the United States Air Force and began his 20-plus year career as an Aircraft Maintainer. Of note in his career was his direct work and involvement in the writing of the tech manuals for the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark. His contributions to that airframe were implemented Air Force-wide, saving the United States Air Force money and resources. It was also during this time that he met the love of his life, "J". They met in Misawa, Japan while her father was also serving in the Air Force and married on August 11, 1962, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Neal was a Vietnam Veteran and retired honorably from service on July 1st, 1984. Until his death, Neal loved "the sound of freedom" while watching aircraft from his deck and would always pause, listen and reflect every time a jet was in the air.
Following his military career, Neal worked at Merillat Industries and after his second retirement, ended his working days as a special education assistant for South Middle School in Rapid City, South Dakota. Neal was a community advocate, active in his local church, and had a heart for serving others.
Neal absolutely loved the Black Hills and enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends as much as possible. Additionally, he loved his backyard wildlife and spent many of his days on his deck feeding birds and talking to "his" squirrels. Neal also had a passion for cars and was often seen or "heard" in his spotless vehicle sporting a huge smile and flawless wax job.
Neal is survived by his wife; his 2 sons; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, James M Carson; his Mother, Maryevelyne Carson; and his daughter, Challise Lyn Carson (Bottomley).
The family would like to ask that you take time to enjoy the beauty around you and cherish every day you are given.
