Sylvester Bartlett Smith, a son of John T. and Hannah (Hill) Smith, was born at Mina, Chautauqua, New York, June 1, 1855, and came with his family to Belleview, Ohio, in 1865 and to Hamilton County Iowa in the spring of 1875. In 1876 he was engaged in general business in Homer, Iowa and there on Dec 20, 1876 was united in marriage with Miss Mary Josephine Near. To them were born three children, Clyde L, now residing in Sioux city, Iowa, Bessie Olive (deceased) and Verne Bartlett, who studied ostiopathy at Kirsville, Mo. Mr Smith's father lived to the ripe old age of 94 years and the son gave promise of a long life but death came suddenly and unexpectedly, occurring at Boone Iowa, Jan 26, 1918 after a short illness with acute kidney trouble. He is survived by the widow, two sons and numerous other relatives. He was a member of a family of seven brothers and four sisters, four of whom, Eliza, James Monroe, Hannah Elizabeth and John T. Jr. preceded him in death. Those living are W.H.H.Smith, of Webster City, Ia.; Chas L. Smith of Enid, Okla.: Mrs Mary Ann Basham of Hazelton, Ia.; Mrs Ella L. Basham of Greenfield Ia and Joseph H. and Josiah B. Smith of Spooner, Wis.
