Marian E. Gjevre, age 88 of Decorah, died Friday, January 11, 2008 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah by Rev. Kim W. Smith with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday, January 14 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the church.

Marian Elizabeth (Haugen) Gjevre was born October 14, 1919 at home in Springfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Gjermund and Dinah (Danielson) Haugen. She was baptized at Springfield Lutheran Church and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Marian graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1938 with a Normal School Teaching Certificate. She then taught at two rural country schools.

She was united in marriage to Norman Henry Tilford Gjevre on August 21, 1941 at Springfield Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children, Barbara, Bonnie and Nels.

Marian and Norman farmed on his family farm, a century farm, for 49 years until his death on May 1, 1990. She later moved into Decorah and lived in her own house. She moved into the Barthell Eastern Star Arlin Falck Assisted Living, then she moved into the Eastern Star Nursing Home and, later, the Aase Haugen Home.

She was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church where she held several leadership positions for many years. She also sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Farm Bureau Women's Chorus, a 4-H leader and she was also a poll worker for elections.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norman; her parents; three sisters, Edna Spilde, Genevieve Omdahl and Adeline Bergan; two brothers, Ivan and Vernon Haugen; and siblings in infancy, Eleanore Haugen, Donald and Leonard Haugen.

Marian is survived by two daughters, Barbara Gjevre Nielsen of Louisville, KY and Bonnie (Buzz) Green of Seattle, WA; one son, Nels (Kris) Gjevre of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Kent Green, Todd Green, Carrie Gjevre, Scott Bullerman and Angie (Guy) Metz; one great-granddaughter, Rylee Metz; two sisters, Esther Winger and Delores (Vernon) Rovang, both of Decorah, IA; one sister-in-law, Elsie Haugen of Decorah; and many nieces and nephews.
