Wanting to be closer to family Darrell moved back to Tahlequah, Oklahoma. There he worked in a few fast food restaurants before going to work for Grace Living Center. There he found a passion for helping the elderly. He worked his way up to Director of Activities and loved organizing special events for all his residents. Some of those activities included setting up craft projects for the residents, game day, painting the nails for residents. While working there he met his best friend Cindy Clinton and her family and she soon became family spending holidays with him. She dubbed him the nickname "Sunshine" for always wearing a smile and being happy.

Due to diabetes and other health issues Darrell focused on spending his time with family and friends. He loved doing craft projects with nieces and nephews.
