According to his obituary, William "enlisted in 1861, and served until the close of the war, April 12, 1865. He was in 62 battles, and was wounded seven times. He loved to talk of his experiences in those days, and his many friends enjoyed hearing him tell of the stirring events in which he took part." William's obituary indicates that he was born in 1837. William's funeral service was conducted by Rev. F. F. Neel
