Alexander "Al" Boyd Jr, eighty-five years of age, passed away on January 12, 2008.

He was a native of Battle Creek, Michigan and a resident of Denham Springs. He retired from the United States Navy after twenty years of service to his country. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the submarine service in the European Theater, and of the Korean War. He attended college while stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago.

He was a gifted athlete participating in organized sports in high school as well as during his naval career. After his retirement, he was hired as the civilian athletic director at the Navy submarine base in New London, Connecticut. He held this position for many years and resigned to move to Louisiana where he taught in the Junior ROTC program at Istrouma High School. After leaving Istrouma, he worked at Capital Bank in Baton Rouge.

His mother was a native of Ireland and his father was a native of Scotland. Al was proud of his Scotch-Irish ancestry and loved to share tales his parents told of their native countries.

He was a member of the Denham Springs American Legion Post 178 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7017 serving as commander of both these organizations. He was a volunteer in the Adult Literacy Program and was proud of the young people he tutored and those he helped prepare for their high school GED test.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Murray Boyd; a daughter, Janice (Nick) Stimac; and his grandson, Shawn McMahan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary O'Connell and Alexander Boyd Sr; a brother, Thomas O'Connell Boyd; and a sister, Lorraine Boyd Young.
