She was born in Dante, Virginia; daughter of the late Banner and Agnes Hurd Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garfield Barnette; two sons, Randall Barnette and Michael Wayne Barnette; one daughter-in-law, Joann Barnette one son-in-law, Scott Sutherland; two brothers, Bill Phillips and Arthur Phillips; and one sister, Dorothy Amos.

Hazel lived most of her adult life in the small community of Gravel Lick, Virginia. She loved her family endlessly and went above and beyond to ensure others' happiness. In the midst of joy and sorrow, it was she who stood as a monumental pillar of strength that seven sons and one daughter called "Mom". Hazel was the Mother and Grandmother that all strive to be alike. She was loved dearly by everyone who came into contact with her and will be missed tremendously.

She is survived by: As per Find a Grave's new rules the survivor section of the obituary is omitted.

Funeral Services for Hazel Arlene Barnette will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2022, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Virginia with Dennis Yearry officiating. Interment will follow in Gravel Lick Regular Baptist Church Cemetery, Castlewood, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Dick Barnette, Jess Barnette, Tink Mullins, Freddie Lee Barnette, Colby Barnette, and Tracey Sutherland. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gerald and Linda Grizzle, Lincoln and Veronica Keith, Gary and Patty Leonard, and Gayle Kiser.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Virginia. The family would like to thank all of her nieces, Linda Sue Mullins, Terri Hicks, Carolyn Evans, Sherry Amos, Angie White, and Irene Robinson for all the gifts and support during this hard time.
