He made a liberal donation towards the building of Harvard Public Library and delivered an address at its dedication. He gave to his native town the clock that now hangs in the belfry of the Unitarian Society; published in 1861, genealogies of the Hapgood family, and in 1894, the History of Harvard, 1732-1893, for free distribution.
