She grew up in Sumter and attended Winn Elementary School, where she was Valedictorian of her 6th grade class. Katherine graduated from Liberty High School in 1963. She attended Voorhees College, graduating in 1965 with a degree in Business Administration. Ms. Smith's professional career included teaching Adult Education, and she worked for various Federal Agencies in Washington, D.C.
During her youth, Katherine attended Emmanuel Methodist Church in Sumter, where she was an acolyte and a member of the Junior Usher Board and the Youth Choir. At the time of her death, Katherine was a beloved member of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD. She was often heard singing hymns of praise and worship in her beautiful alto voice. Her strong faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior was an encouragement to those around her. When one would inquire about how she was doing, her most frequent response was, "I'm holding on to God's unchanging hand."
Katherine was predeceased by her parents, her older sister, Dorothy Smith, and younger sister, Phoebe (Smith) Floyd.
Katherine is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
