Mary Lou Perry Hopkins transitioned on Monday, May 2, 2022, in Windsor, Virginia. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Lucious and Nora Nesbitt Perry and widow of the late Joe L. Hopkins Sr.
Mary attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Manchester High School in the Class of 1965, Pinewood. She also attended the former Sumter Area Technical College. Mary worked as a nurse assistant at the Clarendon Retirement Home and was a part-time employee at Jerry's Truck Stop, both in Manning. She served faithfully as church superintendent at St. James AME Church in Pinewood, where she taught Sunday school until retiring.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six siblings, Susie Mae Nelson, Robert Lee Perry, Lucious Perry, Gladys Goodine, Vernice Brunson and Rovena Stukes.
Survivors are her children, Mirinda L. Anderson of Columbia, Joe L. Hopkins Jr. of Melbourne, Florida, and Leonard (Jamie) Hopkins Sr. of Carrollton, Virginia; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Brunson of Sumter and Mattie Ray of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Graveside services: New Hope AME Church Cemetery, 18808 Panola Road, Pinewood, with the Rev. Dr. Frankie White officiating.
