Harlingen , Texas - Juan Manuel Garcia "Shorty" of Harlingen Texas was called Home on April 22nd, 2022.

Dad was born on April 12th, 1945 and was son to Librado and Eloisa Garcia. He was a proud, lifelong resident of Harlingen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Aaron and his brothers Jesus "Chuey" and Santos.

Dad grew up on the West Side "el barrio" of Harlingen. He had an interesting childhood, from being raised by his parents and his grandmother Maria, to hunting trips with his cousins the Muniz's, to having a coati mundi for a pet. He was a Boy Scout for many years with Beto Zamora as his Scout Master and even though he didn't earn his Eagle Scout, he greatly enjoyed the lifelong friendships he made. Dad was also honored to have been selected to attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs, CO in 1960. Dad attended and graduated Harlingen High School in 1963 and he was a proud Cardinal. After graduation, dad enlisted in the US Army National Guard and he dutifully served his country from 1964-1970, being activated several times but most notably during Hurricane Beulah in 1967 where he helped rescue people and protect property from Harlingen to Port Isabel.

Our Dad was most known for working and later owning Garcia's Service Station on F Street. His father Librado "Chore" began the business in 1949. Our Dad worked there from his teen years until his retirement in July 2009. Even after his retirement he would go to the station to interact with his old customers. Over his nearly 50 years of working at the station not only did our dad have thousands of customers, but he also made that many friends. He had the best jokes and told fascinating stories from growing up in "el barrio", basic training at Ft. Polk, Louisiana, owning a brand new 1966 Chevelle Super Sport and many other adventures. A true Texan, Dad enthusiastically studied Texas history and the folklore of The Valley and could tell you where pretty much any city in Texas was located. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, hunting everything from doves on opening weekend to quail, to his greatest passion, deer and hog hunting. His most memorable hunting experiences included those with his sons, his cousin Robert Muniz, and his friends Socorro Martinez and Scooter Laymon. He often described his hunting experiences with so much detail you felt like you were right there with him. Dad also served as Assistant Scout Master while his sons were in the Boy Scouts. Dad helped mentor young men through Scouting, with many going on to have successful careers as adults.

Dad met our mom in 1967 but they had known of each other for many years prior because her father was a customer at the service station. They dated for a couple of years and married in July 1969. For their honeymoon, they traveled to Colorado Springs because our dad loved the area when he visited as a Boy Scout. He was a great provider to our mom and all four of us kids, working tirelessly 10 to 12 hour days, seven days a week. He only took time off for our yearly family vacations and hunting. It never seemed that Dad was far away because we lived right behind the shop and both Alvaro and Aaron worked with him for several years. Dad existed his entire life on the same three connected lots, the service station, the house he grew up in, and the house he built. To say he will be missed is an understatement. His zest for life and love for his family will live on through us that he leaves behind.

Juan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Guadalupe, son Alvaro (Jennifer), daughters Laura Holmes (Jeffrey) and Rosie Garcia-McGregor (Darrell). He is also survived by his sister Ana Maria Nieto of Laredo. He was "Papo" to Layne, Joshua, Marina, Aryn, Amber, William, Alarie, Oliver, Lucia, and great-grandson Grayson. He is survived by in-laws and outlaws, nieces, and nephews and those that were lucky enough to call him a Friend.

Honored to be Pallbearers are Jeffrey Holmes, Andy Garcia, Darrell McGregor, Javier Villarreal, Layne Garcia, and Joshua Garcia.

Honorary Pallbearer will be William Holmes.

Visitation will be April 26th, 1-9pm with a rosary at 7pm at Trinity Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday April 27th at 10am at Trinity Funeral Chapel led by Fr. Pedro Briseno.

Interment will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria with full military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 205 and VFW Post 2410.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home 1002 E. Harrison Avenue Harlingen, Texas 78550 (956)364-2444. www.trinityfunerals.com
