Mary Ann's parents were Irish immigrants Patrick Counihan and Deborah Burke, who arrived in America in the 1840s. One of eight documented siblings, only Mary Ann's eldest brother had been born in Ireland. After marrying William McLaughlin on June 8, 1876 in Escanaba, Delta County, Michigan, the couple lived in Des Moines County, Iowa for the remainder of their lives. Eleven children were born to them between 1877 and 1897, and most are buried near their parents in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dodgeville, Des Moines County, Iowa. Although Mary Ann's year of birth on the gravestone shared with husband William is 1858, early documentation places her birth 1855-1856. Photo taken in 1965 by DeeAnna Allum Granston.
