Dixon, Arlene M. (Paid Notice)

Arlene M. Dixon passed away December 25, 2007, at Cashmere Convalescent Center. Arlene was born at home, February 26, 1915, to Henry M. and Anna (Dahlquist) Elliott in River Fall, WI, the oldest of five children. Arlene attended country school, graduating from River Falls High School in 1932-33. Hers was a musical family, with each member talented in musical instruments or singing; Arlene playing violin, mandolin and harmonica. For many years before marriage, Arlene traveled and worked on a large turkey farm in southern Minnesota and restaurant work, in and around Great Falls, MT. She traveled alone "out west", joining her sister, Dorothy of Arizona, to visit Flint family relatives in Washington. Arlene met husband, Marion Dixon, traveling on a bus from Waterville to Wenatchee, and they later married April 27, 1946, in River Falls, WI. Their first home was in Almira, WA, with Marion working at what is now Central WA Grain Growers, before moving to the Wenatchee area in 1952, when Marion began work at the new Alcoa Works. Two daughters were born while they were in the Almira area. Although Arlene's occupation was homemaker, that hardly describes her activities. She was a strong, determined and fiercely independent woman, who took great pride and ownership in whatever she undertook. She became charter and life member of the new Trinity United Methodist Church in East Wenatchee, Sunday School teacher and superintendent; member, Board of Trustees, spear-headed the after-church coffee hour with vegetable snacks from their garden; and organizer and cook for Trinity's Harvest dinner each November. She became kiddingly known as the "Kitchen Witch." Her church dedication included bringing daughters, Joyce and Linda, to church and MYF activities and later, her two grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. Arlene was instrumental in the formation of Girl Scouting in East Wenatchee, serving as troop leader for fledgling Brownie Troop 89 and Girl Scout Troop 39, and taking the girls for day outings, day camp and overnight campouts to Scout-A-Vista and Squilchuck State Park. She instigated a Girl Scout uniform exchange and organized Girl Scout cookie sales. Arlene later became known as "Cooky", becoming lead camp cook at Scout-A-Vista. Girls came up through the ranks learning about homemade lye soap, dunking bags, bean hole beans, whittling sticks and rope tying. Arlene was probably one of the original 'think green' recyclers of everything, long before there were such catch phrases. In their retirement years, Arlene joined with Marion in his pursuit of raising prize dahlias, the early formation of the Wenatchee Valley Dahlia Society and traveling the 'dahlia circuit' throughout the Pacific Northwest, with Marion as grower, presenter and judge. She is survived by eldest daughter, Joy Weaver (Chuck) Truitt of East Wenatchee; grandson, Chris (Angel) Rainey of Battleground, WA; granddaughter, JoAnna Holland Hedman of Wenatchee; a sister, Shirley Kurtz and brother, Elwood Elliott, both of River Falls, WI; four great-granddaughters, Sara, Emily, Kaitlyn and Samantha Rainey; one great-grandson, Storm Hedman; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families around River Falls, WI and Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by husband, Marion in 2003; daughter, Linda Holland in 2006; and two sisters, Leota Andrea and Dorothy Sharp. The family would like to extend appreciation to the east wing staff of Cashmere Convalescent Center, Dr. Ashleigh Keyser and former caregiver, Maria Rosas, for their kind attention to Arlene's care. A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 850 N. James, East Wenatchee on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. Memorials, if desired, may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church. Arrangements assisted by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
