Steven R. "Spike" Thornton, 68, of Sperry, died at 5:30 AM Monday, May 9, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born May 14, 1953, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert and Maxine Malcom Thornton.

Steven graduated Burlington Community School.

After graduating high school, Spike started his career at Modern Welding. He enjoyed working at Modern Welding as a welder for over 40 years and took great pride in his craftsmanship.

Steven was baptized, Methodist in Oakville on Mother's Day in 1953. Steven enjoyed being outdoors. He liked to go boating on the river, riding his motorcycle and four wheeler, hiking, and shooting guns and bows. Steven enjoyed trap and sleet and received awards for his marksmanship.

Survivors include his children, Jeremy Thornton of Burlington, Ann (Randy) Prado of LA and Stephen Thornton of Chicago, IL; three grandchildren, Nadia DiMartino of NC, Izel and Benicio Smothers of Davenport, IA; two sisters, Anita Pella of Burlington, and Deanna Bruce of Carmen, IL; brother, Kevin Thornton of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, May 13, 2022 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Burial will be held at a later date.
