Following the surgery by Dr. Denton Cooley, one of the nation's foremost heart surgeons, Rodgers appeared headed toward a normal life, because of an artificial plastic valve implanted in place of one of his own which was badly damaged when he suffered a heart attack Sept. 27. He was able to join his family for a birthday dinner at
their home at 121 Blueberry Lane, Hicksville in December. But late last month, his wife, Marie said, his condition worsened and he was admitted to Doctors Hospital on Jan. 25.
Doctors here told Rodgers in October that the surgery was necessary to save his life. His condition was so delicate that he and his doctors feared that he might not be able to endure the trip to Houston and the operation. Rodgers took the gamble. The Nassau Department of Social Services provided the travel funds so that Rodgers, a maintenance man at the A. Holly Patterson Home in Uniondale, and his wife could
fly to Houston.
In addition to his wife, Rodgers is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Karen Snyder, three sons, Calvin Jr., Richard and William; and a grandson. Services will be held tomorrow at 9:15 PM at the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home here, burial will be in Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery.
