Gordon Russell Johnson

A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, Gordon Russell Johnson, age 84, passed away on Thursday May 5, 2022, at his home.

The youngest of six children, Gordon was born on September 10, 1937, in Hurricane, WV to parents James Walter Johnson and Demma Palestine Bryant. He was raised on a farm on Turkey Creek in southern Putnam County and attended Hurricane High School. It was there that he met and courted his sweetheart (and 1956 Miss Hurricane) Anna Louise Rooper. The couple was married on June 26, 1956 and remained together in love and friendship for the next 66 years. He often expressed his pride that he married "the prettiest girl in the school". Gordon was an automobile body repairman by trade, working at several dealerships in the Charleston-Teays Valley area until opening his own business in the 1970s. After retirement from his business, he worked for several years operating earth moving equipment part-time. His favorite leisure activities included woodworking, listening to southern gospel music, RV traveling and camping, attending auctions, amateur auctioneering, and visiting with friends and family. He was an avid collector, including oil lanterns, coffeepots, cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, and anything else with an engine, and many other items. If you needed something, chances are Gordon had at least three of them. Gordon was proud to call Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior. He was a member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and also attended Five and Twenty Mile Church in Fraziers Bottom, WV. He was a regular attendee and former board member at Mount Nebo Southern Gospel Music Association events in Summersville, WV.

Gordon is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Chester, Dallas, Orus, and Harless Johnson, and sister Mairlis Johnson Edwards.

Surviving are his wife Louise Johnson, his children Rickie Johnson and wife Kim of Dade City, Florida, Vickie Clark and husband Steve of Fuquay Varina, NC, Tony Johnson and wife Linda of Hurricane, WV, and Sherry Williamson and husband Greg of Winfield WV. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Lee Bayliss, Scott Bayliss, Alisha Hughes, and Matthew Williamson, great grandchildren Margaret Hughes, AJ Hughes, and Allie Hughes, and nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane, WV on Wednesday May 11, 2022, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Robert Adkins officiating. The family will greet visitors starting at 11 a.m. preceding the service. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Hurricane.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mount Moriah Cemetery Fund care of Randy Garrett, 291 Shortleaf Lane, Hurricane, WV 25526.
