OBITUARY

Peggy slipped peacefully away this past Monday after a period of declining health. She died as she lived, with durable grace. She was 85 years old. A native of Minnesota, she lived most of her life in the state, interspersed with periods in Idaho, Oregon, California and Massachusetts. She graduated from Northrop Collegiate School and attended Pomona College and the University of Minnesota. A good heart and a determined positive attitude toward life - all of it, its joys and its sorrows - were Peggy's hallmarks. Hers was the heart of a bohemian, and the aesthetic of an artist. She knew beauty. Peggy had a strong will and she loved life. She lived it on her own terms - full (sometimes a bit too full in the judgment of some of the members of her family). She was highly compassionate and she had a well-developed empathy. Her pervasive concern was the well-being of others. She was generous, occasionally to a fault. Peggy enjoyed good food and drink - attending parties and being with her friends was one of her greatest joys. She loved people. However, she did not suffer disappointing behavior gladly - as recipients (deserving or not) of her occasional barbs can attest. She relished cooking and entertaining and her guests were gratefully favored by her abilities as a gracious host. Peggy had a natural talent for color and design and expressed this interest with her clothing, her home decor, her appreciation of good art and in her proficiency as an accomplished gardener of beautiful flowers. She was an able sculptress and she created engaging water colors even during her later years of debility. As a high school student she participated in musical theater - singing was a life-long joy. She was athletic and comfortable in her body, playing tennis proficiently as a youth. In addition to tennis, she enjoyed skiing and golf and she adored dancing. Her peripatetic residential life was mirrored in her enjoyment of travel to Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. Of special note, Peggy's family would like to extend its warmest thanks and appreciation to the devoted and loving caregivers who tended to her in her last years. Peggy was married for 48 years to Clifford F. Anderson, a member of the 1941 and 1942 University of Minnesota football teams and captain-elect of the 1943 team. He predeceased her. She is also predeceased by her parents, David J. Winton and Katherine D. Winton, and by her brother David M. Winton. She is survived by her sister, Katherine W. Evans; son, Mark Anderson; daughter, Katherine A. Crosby (husband Christopher and their children Alexander, William and Lucia); daughter, Margaret D. Anderson (husband David Washburn); and her companion, Yale Smiley. In accord with her wishes, there will be a private family service. A public reception for all of the friends of Peggy and for all of the friends of her family will be held on Friday, July 11 from 5 to 8 PM at Woodhill Country Club, 200 Woodhill Road, Orono, MN 55391. Memorials are suggested to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum or the Deep Portage Conservation Foundation. Peggy chose as her primary life role to be a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family. She succeeded beautifully. We loved her more than words can tell and we will miss her just as much.
