Elizabeth Allen Austin, 72, of Richmond, Virginia, died May 6, 2022, peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. She was a member of St. James's Episcopal Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was born on March 29, 1950 to the late Mary Elizabeth Scammell and the late Ernest Allen in Stamford, Connecticut and later moved to Boxwood Lane Farm in Batesville, Virginia. Elizabeth attended preparatory school at St. Anne's School in Charlottesville, Virginia. She studied at the American University in Lugano, Switzerland and was one of the first women admitted as an undergraduate to the University of Virginia. She married Robert Morris Austin II on July 14, 1973 and had two children, Robert Morris Austin III and Anne Taite Vogeleer. Elizabeth was a dedicated, invested teammate and "den mother" to many colleagues over the years at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Jackson, Mississippi, Georgia Perimeter Community College outside of Atlanta, Georgia, the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and Creative Contracting in Richmond, Virginia. In every endeavor and every relationship, Elizabeth always gave every bit of herself. It is no wonder that she was adored by all those who were fortunate enough to know her, whether they be schoolmates from 60 years ago or new neighbors whom she welcomed with open arms. She also had a special kindness for legions of four-legged creatures she mothered over her lifetime. She took great pride in her expert needlepoint creations and meticulously tended gardens that are metaphors for the care and commitment she gave to her home. Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband and both children; as well as her brothers, Robert Allen of Ruckersville, Va. and John Allen of Keswick, Va.; and three grandchildren, Rider Austin and Charlotte Austin of Burlingame, Calif. and David Vogeleer III of Richmond, Va. A memorial service for Elizabeth will be held at 2 p.m. on May 18, 2022 at St. James's Episcopal Church, 1205 West Franklin Street, with a reception to follow next door at Michaux House. A private interment will follow in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Memorials or donations may be made to the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Forest Campus.
