Veronika Marija Abricka, 87, died on Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Veronika was born May 19, 1926 in Ludzas, Latvia, the daughter of Victor and Maria (Griestins) Abrickis. She attended school in Latvia and studied nursing in Switzerland during and after World War II. Veronika immigrated to America with her parents and young daughter following the end of WorldWar II, settling in Des Moines, and becoming a nurse at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. She worked as a nurse and administrator at Mercy for over 40 years, retiring in 1991. After retirement she continued to do volunteer work with several Mercy related functions and organizations. Veronica moved to Johnston approximately five years ago.

Veronika was a member of the American Business Women's Association, Daugavas Vanadzes, and the Latvian Association and the Sisters of Mercy Associates. She served as Mercy Hospital's loaned executive to the United Way for several years, and following retirement volunteered with the Yucatan Project in pediatric cardiology at Mercy Hospital.

Veronika is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maria-Viktoria Abricka-Longstreth and James Longstreth of Mundelein, IL; a grandson and his wife, Nicholas (Jessica) Longstreth of Germantown, MD; and a niece and her partner, Veronica ( Vicki Cummins) Abrickis of San Mateo, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin brother, Valerjans Abrickis.

Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with sharing of memories starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. Funeral services will be at 9:30 AM Saturday, June 8, at Our Lady of Peace Chapel, 5837 Winwood Drive, Johnston. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop Drumm Care Center or the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be expressed at www.caldwellraddatz.com.
