Helen was born on October 8, 1924 to Louis and Louise (Kumm) Mashak in Town of Portland. February 16, 1944, Helen was united in holy matrimony to Lawrence Hemmersbach. Lawrence passed away in March of 1981.
On October 8, 1982, Helen married Leonhard Schwarz. Leonhard passed away in June of 2003.
After retiring from farming and selling the family farm, Helen and Lawrence moved to Sparta. Helen worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and a transportation aide at the Morrow Memorial Home for 20 years.
Helen was well known for her kindness to everyone she met. Her gardening and baking skills were talents that everyone enjoyed-all will miss her strawberry jam, coffeecakes and poppy seed kolaches. After life on the farm on St. Mary's Ridge, Helen loved traveling. Trips fishing in Canada, traveling around the United States and also to Germany were some wonderful highlights of her life. Helen found the most peace and solace in nature, especially looking at the evening sky while roasting the perfect marshmallow.
She was involved in numerous church and social activities in and around the Sparta area. Helen was a charter member of the Marybelle homemakers and served as President, Vice President and Secretary; she was county treasurer for the Monroe County Extension Homemakers; President of the Christian Mothers Society; Vice President of the Sparta Women's Society; a member of the St. Mary's Ridge and St. Agnes Catholic Order of Foresters; Franciscan Skemp Auxiliary associate and the Morrow Home Auxiliary member.
