Shawnee resident Don Milburn Deatherage,76, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at his home.He was born Dec. 9, 1931, in Shawnee to Luther Marvin and Beulah Alice Deatherage.
He graduated from Shawnee High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He went on to play Major League Baseball for the Giants. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.
Don retired from the Fresno California Fire Department after 25 years of service. He then returned to Shawnee and married Julia Smith on April 20, 1998. He loved family, fishing, golf and racket-ball.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marvin.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Deatherage of Shawnee; children, Duane Deatherage of Shawnee, Doug Deatherage of Fresno, Calif., and Donna Lou and husband Gary Samis of Fresno, Calif.; grandsons, Shawn and wife Blanca Williams of Fresno, Calif., and Chris and wife April Williams of Shawnee, Gary and wife Lisa Samis of Fresno, Calif., and Matthew Deatherage of Shawnee; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Williams of Shawnee and Estella Marie Williams of Fresno, Calif.; step-son, Robert Smith of Fresno, Calif.; step-daughter, Judy Smith of Las Vegas, Nev., and Robin Smith of Monterey, Calif.; four sisters, Maxine Alexander and husband, Jack, of San Antonio, Marcene Massey and husband, Eugene, of Shawnee, Lou Benton and husband, Lee, of Oklahoma City, Deanie Wells and husband, David, of Shawnee; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Service will be 10 a.m. today at the Chapel of Walker Funeral Service with the Rev. Keith Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
