Nothing To Live For - An Old Man's Suicide
WHANGAREI An inquest took place this morning before Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., regarding the death of an old bachelor(sic), Mr Robert Sealand Bowman, who was found by his employer, Dr Good, hanging in a woodshed. Near the body were a whisky bottle and a glass, both empty and within easy reach. Dr Good considered that life had been extinct for probably 18 or 20 hours before his discovery of the body. A not was found by witness in the quarters occupied by the deceased, his gardener, reading: "Tired of life. Nothing to live for. Robert Sealand Bowman"
When last seen alive on Friday, deceased appeared to be quite normal, but evidence was submitted that on several occasions he complained that life was not worth living and that he frequently appeared to be very morbid and depressed.
A verdict was returned of death by strangulation.
