Betty was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on July 18, 1929, the firstborn of Ken and Alice Varnum. She attended Marshalltown High School where she was selected to be Homecoming Queen in 1946 and graduated in the Class of 1947. After high school, Betty attended Jr. College and Iowa State Teacher's College graduating in 1949. She went on to teach elementary school in Vinton, Iowa, until 1951.

Betty married the love of her life, Danny Caldwell, on June 6, 1951. They met on a blind date the previous fall, and immediately fell in love. Just a few days after the wedding ceremony, Danny left the country for one year while serving with the Marine Corps in Korea.

When Danny came home from Korea, he and Betty farmed for two years in Vinton, Iowa, before moving to Des Moines and then to Southern California where Danny graduated from Los Angeles Baptist College (LABC) and became a pastor in Carpinteria, California. Betty and Danny pastored several church families through the years including Glenvar, Virginia and Quarry, Iowa.

Betty and Danny moved back to Iowa in 1983, where together they started the successful Minute Man Copy Center on South 1st Street in Marshalltown. They retired from Minute Man in 2001 and enjoyed traveling around the country to see their kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Betty and Danny loved their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and lived their life as a testament to Him. Danny went to be with the Lord on December 18, 2015, and Betty joined him on May 3, 2022. They are surely singing hymns together in Heaven, including Betty's favorite hymn, 'My Jesus I Love Thee'.

Betty had a true passion for teaching those willing to be taught. She was a natural story teller and could keep a room of a hundred kids at attention in one of her Sunday School Classes. Her sanguine personality with her strong faith, resulted in an ever present peace that God was in control.

Betty will be deeply missed by her two siblings Doris Swanson of Waukee, Iowa and Lloyd (JoAnn) Varnum of Marshalltown, Iowa, as well as the extended family members of the Varnum and Caldwell families and her six kids and their families, Steve (Cathy) Caldwell of Rocklin, California, Jayne (Wayne) Jones of Martinez, California, Kurt (Cheryl) Caldwell of Sunland, California, Brent (Mary) Caldwell of Roanoke, Virginia, Cris (Darci) Caldwell of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ann (Jason) Vorderbrueggen of Martinez, California. She truly loved her many grandchildren and great grandchildren and prayed for them by name each day.

Although we will miss her here on earth, our hearts are rejoicing that she is now in Heaven with Danny and that they are both in the presence of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A celebration of life will be held at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown on Saturday, May 21st at 10:30 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please join us. She will be laid to rest in the Bear Creek Cemetery north of Vinton, Iowa, next to her late husband, Dan.
