He was born April 12, 1948 in Forsyth County to the late Clyde Wesley Matthews, Sr. and Martha Jane Long Matthews.
John was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Vietnam War.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Wesley Matthews, Jr., and by his father-in-law, Joseph Thad Holcomb.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of more than 16 years, Charlotte Christine "Chris" Matthews; his children, Jennifer Matthews Pruitt (Matthew); Janel Matthews Steelman (Lincoln); Heather Lutz (Hayes); six grandchildren; sister, Brenda Matthews Foster (Derris); mother-in-law, Annette Holcomb; and sister-in-law, Teresa Geiger.
A memorial service will be held at a later date for the family.
