Before his first birthday, Richard's parents moved to a farm near Twin Falls, Idaho, where he attended elementary school. Then in 1927, the family moved to Creswell, Oregon. He graduated from high school there in 1930 and attended the University of Oregon at Eugene.

On July 11, 1936, Richard married Nancy ELIZABETH Morris in Grimes, California. They had two sons.

Richard farmed near Grimes for over 55 years and was active in many facets of public life. He was a member of the Grand Island Fire Department for 35 years serving as commissioner for 25 years; he was a charter member of the water district and served as Board Chairman for 25 years; and he was a school trustee for 20 year.

He enjoyed deer hunting trips in California, Nevada and Wyoming.
