Eliza Ann (Cochran) Cochrane may have been born in Westfield, New York on April 14, 1821. We first find her baptism at the Westfield Presbyterian Church in 1827, and joining the church in 1837.

She was married to Robert Cochrane on Dec. 28, 1843, just a year and 5 months after Robert, his brother, John and father, Hugh came to the United States from County Down Ireland.

Robert and Eliza had three children. Elizabeth 'Libby' Margaret Cochrane was born Aug 4, 1844, Emmett was born 11 Oct 1846 and Byron James was born April 11, 1849.

Only weeks after Byron was born, the family, along with Robert's father Hugh, left Westfield for greener pastures in the west.

The family first spent time in Trenton Twp., Dodge Co., Wisconsin. It was here in 1851 that Robert died as a result of enhaling metal filings from an Ax grinding factory he worked in while living in Westfield. Two years later little Emmett died.

Sometime after the beginning of the Civil War, the family moved to Racine Twp., Mower Co., Minnesota. In 1872 the family made their move to Lake Cochrane, Gary, South Dakota. Eliza lived with her daughter Elizabeth and her family on what is known as the old Bostic farm on the Northeast corner of Lake Cochrane.

Eliza became very ill in the late 1880's and evidently spent a great deal of time in bed as her obituary in the Gary Interstate tells, "After so much suffering and patient waiting for the final summons, death was to her a blessed change, and those who mourn her loss cannot wish her again upon that bed of pain".

Eliza died on Sept. 3, 1888. She left behind a son and a daughter and their families as well as a brother and four sisters.
