Obituary of Melba June Garrett (1927-2022)
Melba June Garrett, age 95, passed away May 4, 2022, in Austin, Texas. She was born to Dewey Mack and Orpha Taylor Odom on March 30, 1927, at the small community of Brazos, south of Mineral Wells, in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Numerous Odom and Taylor relatives lived in the Santo area "out south" of Mineral Wells. Melba started school at Brazos, where her father opened a barber shop in 1924, cutting hair with hand clippers before electricity was available. The family moved to Mineral Wells in 1938 and Dewey continued with Odom's Barber Shop, his career for fifty years. Melba graduated from Mineral Wells High and began North Texas College at Denton, where sister Doniece was a student in 1945, and they lived in a rooming house together.

Melba met World War II Navy veteran Bill Garrett at college, where Bill went to school on the G.I. Bill and later graduated. Denton was Bill's hometown, where his father, O.J. Garrett Sr., had a shoe repair shop, always saying, "he saved a lot of soles." Bill returned in early 1946 from three and a half years of service as a sonarman on submarine patrol ships in the Pacific, dangerous duty.

Melba June Odom and Olan James Garrett, Jr. were married June 8, 1947, at the North Oaks Church of Christ in Mineral Wells. Bill was recalled to Navy duty as an officer during the Korean War, stationed at Key West. Afterwards, the family moved to Austin in 1954, where Bill had a career at Farmers Insurance and continued his career in the Austin Navy Reserve. Melba worked for many years at the University of Texas in the printing department. The family were faithful members of the Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ.

Melba was preceded in death by husband Olan J. "Bill" Garrett in 1988, her sister, Doniece Ramsey of Austin, and parents, Orpha and Dewey Odom of Mineral Wells.

The family includes son, Dr. J. Curtis Garrett and wife Debra of College Station; daughter Barbara James and husband, Richard of Round Rock; grandchildren Kimberly Monk and husband Chris of Kingwood, Dr. Bryan Garrett and wife Dr. Laura Garrett of College Station, Bradley James and wife Beth of Leander, and Stacy Harris of Round Rock. Melba has seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Vaughn and wife Pat Odom of Euless, Texas.

Melba can be remembered for her love of Jesus, her kind and loving heart and work ethic. She took good care of her family. She never left her house without having the dishes washed, an old German tradition of a clean house, making sure the house was clean before going to bed. Melba loved her yard, flowers, plants, and always had a vegetable garden growing things she loved to cook.

We give special thanks to Buckner Villas Campbell and Harbor units for their diligent and kind care for the last fourteen years and five months, after Melba had a stroke at age 80.

We give special thanks to Connie Reinlie, for the kind and loving care in assisting Melba as friend and caretaker.

We give special thanks to Minister Charlie Johanson and many church friends at the Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, with family and friends in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ, 11908 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas 78753.
