E. Pershing Volkart, of Aberdeen, died August 26 at Harford Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Born September 24, 1917 at Ripkens Corner of Aberdeen, he was the son of Edna and Ernest Volkart.
After graduating in 1934 from Aberdeen High School, Mr. Volkart went on to graduate from Western Maryland College and Virginia- Maryland School of Bank Management. He was employed at First National Bank of Aberdeen from 1940 to 1963, appointed vice-president of First National Bank of Harford County in Bel Air, served as President and CEO of County Banking and Trust from 1971 to 1991, which later became Mercantile Banking and Trust. After retiring in March of 1991 Pershing remained with Mercantile Bank as a consultant until his death. In the community he was once President of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, President of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce, President of Harford Day School in Bel Air, served on the Advisory Board of Harford Community College and served on the Board of Directors of Harford Memorial Hospital. Mr. Volkart was a member of Aberdeen Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Aberdeen which made him their citizen of the year in 2003, the Elkton Rotary Club where he was a past president and received a Paul Harris Fellow award. He was awarded citizen of the year in 1959 by AJ Hutner and Lodge "B'nai Brith", and received the citizens award of the Del Marva Boy Scouts of America Cecil County. Pershing was very active in athletics playing baseball for the Aberdeen Canners and softball for Lee's Garage. While at college he competed for 4 years on the tennis team and served as their captain, and played on the soccer team.
Mr. Volkart is survived by his wife of 68 years the former Mary Ellen Stark; his daughters Anne V. Wood of Havre de Grace and Barbara E. V. Brooks of Fayetteville, N.C.; his granddaughter Mary Anne Brooks of Fayetteville, N.C., and his cousin Carolyn Mitchell of Aberdeen. In addition to his parents Mr. Volkart was predeceased by two brothers; Kenneth L. Volkart and Dr. Edmund H. Volkart and brothers-in-law Dorsey Ficklin and Elwood Stark.
Friends may call at the family owned Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home, Aberdeen on Friday, August 29 from 1 to 3 P.M. and 5 to 8 P.M. A funeral service officiated by Rev. G. Neal Wirtanen will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 201 Mt. Royal Ave., Aberdeen, MD 21001 on Saturday, August 30 at 11 A.M. Interment will follow in Baker Cemetery in Aberdeen. Pallbearers will be Elwood Stark Jr., Harold E. Stark II, Kenneth Volkart Jr., Thomas D Ficklin, Bruce Mitchell and Theodore Hart. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Hamm Jr., S. Dell Foxx, James Nicholson, Steven Hinder and Dr. Robert Gibson. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Harford Memorial Hospital, 501 S. Union Ave, Havre de Grace, MD 21078
