Sergeant Joseph Murphy received his commission on February 12, 1968, and was in recruit class 101. He retired on March 7, 2005, from the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Sergeant Murphy served a total of 37 years and 24 days of faithful and dedicated service to the department.

Of note, Sergeant Murphy followed his father, Joseph E. Murphy, into the field of law enforcement and became the second generation member of the family to do so; and his son, Joseph R. Murphy, followed his father into the field of law enforcement and became a third-generation officer with the same agency. His son later resigned his commission and is now a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Joseph W. Murphy, 75, of Leasburg, MO, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 30, 2022, with his wife Barbara by his side, at the Crab Apple Village of Saint Clair.

He was a St. Louis police officer for 37 years. He graduated from the Police Academy on February 12, 1968, and began as a patrolman in the 6th District. He soon became a detective, retiring as a sergeant on March 7, 2005. He was a vintage car enthusiast and enjoyed woodworking, researching family ancestry and spending time with his five dogs. He is survived by Mrs. Barbara (nee Jackson) Murphy, and Roberta S. (Schwer) Murphy. Children: Joseph R. Murphy (Deborah), Lisa Murphy, and Jennifer Sweeney (Phil). Grandfather to Kayla Sweeney, MacKenzie Sweeney, Colin Sweeney, Meghan Murphy, and Tim Murphy. Brother to Patricia Davis (Jim), Kathleen Kutzgar (Edward) and Maureen Calame (Kevin). Uncle to Michael Wiedemann and Kelly Wade. Beloved brother-in-law, cousin, and friend. Preceded in death by parents Joseph E. Murphy and Delores Murphy, and sister Patricia A. Davis.
