Mary married Al Helzer on August 28, 1955, and together they had three children, Mike, Jim and Janet. In the early years the Helzer family lived on the west side of Fort Collins, right at the foothills. They farmed on Harmony road where Outback restaurant is now located. During that time Janet was diagnosed with Diabetes and Jim had Leggperthes, a hip disease. Mary took care of both Jim and Janet while Mike helped Al on the farm. Those years bring memories of horseback riding, 4-H and various school activities.
Mary and Al separated in the mid-seventies at which time Mary became a legal secretary working in both Fort Collins and Cheyenne. After retiring Mary lived on the west side of Fort Collins until 2014 when she moved to Windsor. Mary quickly fell in love with being in Windsor. Up until her death there were many cookouts and fun times at both Janet's and Jim's. Mike would visit on occasion from Montana.
Family was so important to Mary and at the end, all of her kids had the opportunity to share their love with her. Mary peacefully passed away after a short illness on October 15, 2021. We all hold special memories in our hearts, and we say "a life well lived." Mary wants all of her family and friends to know how much she loved each of you!
Mary is survived by her three children along with eight Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren.
Mary's Crossing
In honor of Mary, a plaque has been placed by the bridge at County Line Ranch. The bridge is now known as "Mary's Crossing" signifying her move from Nebraska and creating her life here in Colorado.
