John R. Evans, North Abington Township, died at Carbondale Nursing Home on Friday. His wife, Beverly, died in 2003.

Born in Lewiston, Maine, he was the son of the late Frank J. and A. Romaine Fetzer Evans. He was a 1953 graduate of Scranton Central, then graduated from the University of Delaware. He was an Army Veteran C. Battery First Missile Battalion, 67th Artillery, serving in Germany from 1957 to 1961.

John lived in North Abington Township since 1965. He retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas where he was instrumental in the transition of asphalt shingles from organic material to fiberglass. He previously worked for Kimberly Clark, Kellogg, and Dupont.

He was a member of the Lennox VFW Post 8488 and several Masonic organizations: Hermann Humboldt Lodge - Philadelphia No. 125, Schiller Lodge – Scranton No. 345, Warren Chapter No. 180, Montrose Temple Council No. 47, Nazarene Commandery No. 99, and Northeastern York Rite College – Allentown No. 137.

John was an avid game bird hunter who loved the German Shorthaired Pointer breed and was a voracious Green Bay Packers fan, having taken several trips to Lambeau Field.

Surviving are sons John, Todd, Frank, and Mark; daughter Carolyn Lewis, with whom he resided; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Glenn, in 1987, sister Judith Evans McRae, and grandson Christopher Evans.

The family would like to thank the Carbondale Nursing Home staff and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassionate care of John.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp. Those attending the service should meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. to process together to the cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
