Leonard Lee "Peanut" Graves, Jr., 66, of Matoaka, WV died Friday, May 7, 2021 at his residence. Born June 6, 1954 in Giatto, he was the son of the late Leonard Lee Graves, Sr. and Nannie Lewis Graves. Peanut was a 1972 graduate of Matoaka High School where he excelled in basketball and was a member of the WV State Championship team. He was a journeyman pipe fitter for 30 years and the only African American belonging to the union. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving as a medic and psychiatric ward specialist. He was also a coal miner for several years. Peanut was a youth basketball coach in Bluefield, VA, and Switchback Elementary School. He was an avid gardener and had a magical green thumb that could bring anything back to life. Peanut enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, and sports. He loved playing his guitar and had a love for music. He was in numerous bands over the years including "The Fugitives" and most recently "The Banned" and played and sang on Saturday nights at Sam's (Modad's) in Princeton. Peanut was known for his infectious laugh and loved his family.
