Martha Etta (also found as Etta Martha) Badker was born Martha Etta Carothers on August 28, 1883 at Kimbolton, Guernsey, Ohio to parents George Patterson Carothers and Emma Ingram. She was the sixth of their eleven children. Her siblings were: Sarah Ellen, John Hamilton, James Dale, Rosella Jane, William Garfield, Elizabeth Miller, Mary Josephine, Minnie Agnes, Margaret Alys and Albert George.

Her parents moved not long after her birth west and settled near Garner, Hancock, Iowa. Found Etta in the 1895 census living at Garner, Hancock, Iowa: Etta age 11.

Found in the 1900 census living with an Ingram uncle and his family at Garner, Hancock, IA., helping with housework: James Ingram 46, Minnie Ingram 36, William H Ingram 5, Christana Ingram 0/12, James Caruthers 21, Ettie Caruthers 16.
