Roy W. Spencer
Roy W. Spencer, age 99, of Adrian passed away at Brookdale Independent Living Facility on Oct. 9, 2021.
Roy was born to John Franklin and Artie Lee (Suiter) Spencer in Lansing, MI on March 27, 1922. He was married to Helen M. Spencer (Furst) for 73 years, who was his high school sweetheart and best friend. They were married March 17, 1943, in a Methodist church north of Times Square where Roy was stationed in New York with the US Coast Guard. Roy was a veteran of World War II and served on the Navy troop ship (The General William H. Gordan AP 117).
Throughout his life Roy enjoyed many hobbies, including sports, travel, fishing, hunting, music and attending church with family and friends to name a few. He was on Eastern High schools undefeated 1939 baseball team (as a pitcher) and was Co-and Captain of the cross-country team. He spent many years traveling with his wife and family. They visited all 50 states, and several other countries throughout the world. He loved country music and played the guitar, harmonica and sang (all at the same time!). He loved fishing with his father and grandfather, and his kids and grandkids. He was a regular walker at Lansing Mall for many years.
Roy worked at Lansing Drop Forge for 4 years, barbered for 18 years, 14 in his own shop in Lansing. He also worked over 17 years at the Oldsmobile Plant 2. His first job was using horse drawn wagon and delivering milk to his neighbors.
Roy is survived by his son Scott Spencer (Debra) of Brooklyn, MI; daughter Trudy Spencer of Silverthorne, CO; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their special thanks to all of the caregivers and staff at Brookdale who cared for Roy and Helen. There will be a funeral service for Roy at 12:00 noon Thursday October 14th, with visitation prior begining at 10:30am at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing.
