It is with great sadness that we share the news of Helen C. Holmes' passing on January 2, 2022 at the age of 96. Helen was surrounded by her loved ones during her peaceful passing at home. We mourn her loss, but also rejoice in her life. Helen was born on December 17th, 1925, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Georgia Viola and Robert Dewey Cassell, where she spent her childhood along with her siblings, Virginia, Robert Dewey, and Sue Jo. After graduating from high school in 1941, she was determined to fund and pursue her education working for one year at a bank before starting her undergraduate work at Montreat College from 1943 to 1947 with a degree in English and a minor in Spanish. Helen continued her education pursuing a Master's in Bible Studies and Christian Education at the Presbyterian School for Christian Education, Union Theological Seminary, graduating in 1949. Soon thereafter, she moved to Kingsville, Texas, teaching high school general education for two years, and then Dallas, Texas where she served as the director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian Church for one year. It was in Dallas that Helen met her future husband, Robert T. Holmes, married on July 31st, 1954, and raised four daughters: Margaret, Debbie, Helen, and Bobbie.
Helen decided to return to work as a substitute teacher for the Dallas Independent School District, serving as the Parent Teacher Association President, and was active in the Church Women's United group from 1970 to 1985. She went on to teach Spanish language at Sunset High School in the Dallas Independent School District from 1985 to 1990. Helen was also blessed with two grandchildren, Laura and Logan, and enjoyed her time as "My My" watching them grow into adulthood. She was a very accomplished woman professionally and as a sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, where she was respected, admired, and loved deeply. The example she set for family was inspirational and everlasting. Helen, you will be deeply missed, never forgotten, and always loved.
In lieu of flowers, Helen's wishes were to consider donating to the First Presbyterian Church, 1835 Young Street, Dallas, TX, 75201. (214) 748-8051. fpcdallas.org
