Mrs. Katie Mae Tyler Blevins

May 20, 1937 - April 25, 2022 (age 84)

Katie Mae Tyler Blevins, native of Orrville, Alabama, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022 at Candler Hospital, 5353 Reynolds Street in Savannah, Georgia. Katie was born on May 20, 1937 in Orrville, Alabama to the late John Brookes and Elaine Tyler.

Katie lived most of her life in Selma, Alabama. She was educated in Selma, Alabama and graduated from R.B. Hudson High School in Selma, Alabama. She was married to Robert Blevins until his passing on June 1, 1985. She was called "Dear" by family and friends. Katie really loved her family an her husband's family. She looked after her mother, who live next door to her.

Katie retired from Home Health Care and spent time loving on her family. She was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Johnnie Blunt. Katie's love for Jesus Christ was no secret as she passionately spread the good news to everyone she came in contact with. Katie had a humble spirit; she was a sweet, soft spoken person who never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with loving and open arms.

Katie always supported her husband, Robert, in his decisions to assist his family. She agreed with her husband, who loved Lincoln and Cadillac vehicles, when he wanted to let his brother use one of his cars one summer in the 1970's. When her brother-in-law went home to Selma, he was surprised that they would allow him to use one of their cars instead of a rental car. The car was a nice Lincoln Town Car.

This is a very funny and heart-warming story about Katie, her husband, Robert and their daughter Elaine Patsy. They took a road trip from Selma, Alabama to Seaside, California in 1973. They were the first family members from Alabama to go to California to visit her brothers-in-law, who lived on the Monterey Peninsula in Seaside (Monterey County), California. They had a nice trip and arrived in Monterey County, California without a problem. Robert was driving north on U.S. Highway 101, which is the correct highway to get to the Monterey Peninsula. But, the highway signs weren't and still aren't the best, and you have to know where to exit from Hwy 101 in Salinas, California to get to the Monterey Peninsula. Robert missed the exit and ended up in San Jose, California, about 50 miles north of the city he was looking for. He went to a pay telephone booth and tried to make a telephone call to his brothers, because he thought he was in the right city. The operator told him to put more money in the phone. He was confused and asked the operator, "Since when do I have to pay extra for a local call?" The operator then told him he was not making a local call because he was in San Jose, California trying to call Seaside, California, 50 miles away and that was long distance. He added money to the phone and completed the call to his brothers and they gave him directions to come back to the Monterey Peninsula. When he finally arrived in Seaside, California his brothers met him on Fremont Boulevard. After they got home they all had a very big laugh when Robert told the story about what the operator told him. Robert said, quote, "She told me to put more money in the phone, and I said, Why I gotta pay more money to make a local call? Then she said I wasn't making a local call because I was in "Ho Ho Zay" or somewhere and that was long distance."
