FATAL ACCIDENT.
I regret to have to record a melancholy occurrence at Kentishbury on Saturday
last. It appears that three youths were proceeding across a paddock on their way to
reap in a wheat field belonging to Mr Diprose. A rather high wind was blowing at the time, and a son of Mr Diprose called out that the limb of a tree was falling, when all of them started running, but as the ground was soft and boggy, they were unable to get clear of the falling branch. All three were struck, two escaping with slight scratches, whilst the unfortunate young Diprose, a lad some 14 years of age, was killed on the spot, his skull being completely smashed in. The police at Latrobe were communicated with as soon as possible after the occurrence, and on Sunday
morning the distressed parents were informed that no inquest would be held.
The Launceston Examiner Sat 12 Mar 1870
Arthur Diprose lost his life. He was a son of Mr. Isaac Diprose, a name familiar to many
of your readers. Such an accident, to which we are all subject in the bush, has cast a
gloom over the place. He was buried on Sunday; and the numbers who assembled round
the grave have expressed their sympathy for the bereaved parents, who are deservedly respected.
Burial location confirmed by TFHS, Mersey Branch, Sheffield Pioneer Cemetery.
Reference the book "From All Known Burials in the Kentish Municipality" there, is a listing for Arthur.Oliver Diprose, buried in the Sheffield Pioneer Cemetery on 5th March 1870 age 13.
