James Eugene Dewater, 78, of Milton, Florida passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. He was born on November 8, 1943 in Waterloo, Iowa to parents, Keith and Pearl (Thorp) Dewater. After graduation from East High, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he faithfully served for 28 years.

During his Navy Career as a Journalist, he was editor of one newspaper and two magazines and was in charge of three overseas radio and TV stations. He also served with the Spacecraft Recovery Force as spokesman at NASA's Houston Press Center during Apollo, Skylab and Apollo-Soyeuz space missions.

During his military career, he was stationed in Illinois, Hawaii, Virginia, Florida, Iceland, Cuba and Diego Garcia. His military decorations include two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals, six Good Conduct Medals, the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Ribbons, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Journalist in September 1988.

On January 5, 1963, he married Nancy Gann, also of Waterloo during a private ceremony in Waukegan, IL. After retirement from the Navy, he and Nancy settled in Milton, Florida, where he held several Federal Civil Service jobs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Terry, and his sister, Cheryl.

An ardent Florida State Seminole fan, James is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Kevin and Kent; six grandchildren, Brandon, Bradly, Amanda, Bethany, Carley and Kelsey, and seven great-grandchildren, Damien, Ivy, Landen, Jordin, Ashtyn, Tyson, and Gabe. He is survived by two brothers, Gary and Richard, and two sisters, Kathy and Ann.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2022 with visitation from 10:00-11:00am and services at 11:00am at Lewis Funeral Home Milton Chapel, 6405 Highway 90 W, Milton, Florida 32570.

Gann-Dewater Wedding vows are announced-

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Gann of 2125 Clear View are announcing the marriage of their daughter Nancy Irene to Seaman James Eugene Dewater.
The wedding ceremony was Saturday, January 5, 1963 in Waukegan, Illinois. Attendants were Seaman and Mrs. Charles Dewater, brother and sister-in-law of the groom, of Great Lakes, Illinois.
The bride is employed by F. W. Woolworth Co. in North Chicago, Illinois. Her husband, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dewater of 137 Marion St., Evansdale, is a journalist stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center.
The Couple are making their home at 1806 Sheridan Road, North Chicago.
