Connecticut Governor. Educated at Norfolk Academy Connecticut, he taught school in the Norfolk, worked on his father's farm and was president of the local agricultural society. He worked with railroad officials to route a train through the Colebrook area, which increased sales for produce freighted to the city. He was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly, in 1856, served as Postmaster for Riverton, Connecticut, (1877-81) and a member of the Connecticut State Senate, (1883-85). He also served twice as the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, serving (1885-87, 95-97). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican the 40th Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1899. During his term, he was successful in leaving a financially sound state treasury and increased governmental expenditures. After leaving the office, he remained active in civic events until his death at age 71.
