James Byrd
May 26, 1927 - April 22, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - James "Jim" Morris Byrd, Sr., was born May 26, 1927, in Windsor, NC, and was called home to his Heavenly Father on April 22, 2022. He was blessed to live a beautiful, vibrant life. He was a generous, loving husband to his wife Lecta for over 73 years and was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a true southern gentleman who honored His Lord throughout his life in his thoughts, actions and deeds.
Jim served his country in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean war, going on to later serve in the Air National Guard. He retired from Nationwide Insurance after more than 30 years, however, full-time retirement was short-lived and he ended up going back to work part-time for an additional ten years. He was a faithful member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and was designated as Trustee Emeritus after many years of service.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lecta Morgan Byrd, sons Jim (Tammi) Byrd, Jr., John (Loretta) Byrd, and David (Sandra) Byrd, granddaughters Anna (David) Brent and Blakely (Bryson) Radford, great-grandsons Lawson and Callen Brent and sister Sue (Buck) Sitterson, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Joseph (Peggy) Byrd.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 28, at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 6952 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC, 29212. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church's Gathering Place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church or Carolina Children's Home.
