Son of Obie and Joan Young. He grew up in Great Bend, KS before joining the U.S. Navy. Hewas active duty in the Navy for 4 years during the Vietnam War and served in the Navy Reserves for 19 years. He enjoyed attending the reunions for his ship the U.S.S. Wedderburn - DD684. He attended Fort Hays State University and joined AT&T where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corp and continued to coach, support and attend Drum Corp International events. His service project after retirement was with the Boy Scouts of America. He served the Atlanta Area Council in Troops 129 and 629 and at the Bert Adams Scout Camp as merit badge counselor, chaplain, Assistant Scout Master, Unit Commissioner, trainer, and driver. He was an NRA certified Safety Officer and supervised the shooting range at Bert Adams for the last year. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow and had completed Wood Badge. He was a member of The American Legion, the VFW, and a regular donor to the American Red Cross. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Carolyn; daughter and son-in-law Tiffany and Jon Benton; grandchildren, Colin and Katelyn; and siblings, Denny and Celinda.
